Malik B. El-Amin
Artistic Director & Co-Founder

After arriving in Los Angeles (from New York) to further his acting career, Malik B. El-Amin began going deaf – progressing from hearing aids, to a cochlear implant surgery in 2010. This journey from hearing to deafness, and back to hearing again fundamentally changed his world view as it relates to opportunity and accessibility for underrepresented groups. Combined with his passion for theatre, this new perspective led to the formation of GRIOT THEATRE as an effort to create a forum for professional theatre artists from underrepresented groups - including women, artists of color and artists with physical disabilities - to interpret theatre in new ways.

Malik began his artistic journey as an actor and has appeared in commercials, television, and numerous plays at regional theaters including Indiana Repertory Theatre, Penumbra Theatre, Colorado Shakespeare Festival, Commonwealth Shakespeare Festival, Ensemble Theatre of Cincinnati, and Organic Theatre Company, among others. His theatre directing credits include A WOMAN CALLED TRUTH, and Griot Theatre's OTHELLO, JULIUS CAESAR, THE ARCHER FROM MALIS, and VOICES. Malik produced AN ACCIDENT, which was nominated for 3 NAACP Theatre Awards, winning for "Best Actress".

Malik holds a BS in Industrial Engineering from the University of Oklahoma, an MFA in Theatre Arts from Brandeis University and an M.B.A. in Nonprofit Management from American Jewish University. He is also a certified actor/combatant with the Society of American Fight Directors and a member of Actors Equity Association (AEA) and the Screen Actors Guild (SAG-AFTRA).
